10 questions to ask yourself when choosing your STATION

10 questions to help you choose your next workstation without making a mistake

Choosing a new machine is an important purchase. It's all about finding the hardware that's best suited to your future use. Does your business require significant system resources for graphics creation, CPU and/or GPU computing, or simulation?

You think you've got the configuration right, but find you're still waiting behind the workstation. In this case, it's imperative that you pay close attention to the machine's configuration. To help you cross-check the information provided by manufacturers and editors, we've put together a checklist.

  • Today, with my equipment, what is the main software on which I want to reduce my processing times? The expected optimization must be measurable and not just based on a feeling. All you have to do is run some tests, using a FRA-SYS loan machine, and compare the results.

  • What do I need my equipment for? Calculations, flow simulation, structural mechanics, modeling, drawing, video editing, plan design, etc.

  • Is my software single or multi-core, can it use hyper-threading?

  • What other uses will my hardware have to support? Will they run in parallel, on one or more other screens?

  • Do I have a license that limits my usage rights to a given number of cores?

  • What graphics do I need? Adobe, After Effects, Plant 4D, C4D, Blender, Autocad, Archicad, etc.

  • Do I have CUDA processing? This is a parallel processing architecture that boosts system computing performance by exploiting the power of graphics processors.

  • Does the publisher require Quadro graphics cards?

  • How much memory do I use at most?

  • Is the work done locally on the machine, without archiving, or remotely, on the network?

Answering these questions enables us to dimension the various machine components. The next step is to ensure that the configuration is homogeneous. If not, it's best to identify the blocking point(s). After all, there's no point in having a top-of-the-range graphics card if there's a bottleneck blocking other hardware components.

If you can't answer all these questions, don't worry.
